Since the end of the 19th century, Europe has had open-air museums. From the very start, representative items from agriculture have been among the objects on display. With the industrialisation of agriculture in the 20th century, it became increasingly difficult to impart knowledge about agriculture in the forum of a museum: machines became bigger and bigger and increasingly more specialised; the number of visitors with background knowledge about agriculture steadily decreased. The example of the new exhibition buildings at the open-air museums in Cloppenburg and Kiekeberg (District of Harburg) illustrates how museums can also give visitors an understanding of modern agriculture.
