The increase of organic supermarkets and the degree in which consumption of organic food products is rising suggest a “bio-boom”. This article examines the example of the producer-consumer association “Tagwerk” in Bavaria. It analyzes the difficulties that emerge in establishing a varied assortment of ecologically produced local goods. Farmers have to be resourceful in creating new products that at the same time have to fit local market requirements. But for the consumers not only the products are of importance. They are also looking for well-being and a meaningful life. As a result, the organic store has become a venue mainly for people who understand and agree with these ideas. Oral life stories showed that customers mix imaginations of ecological farming based on local resources and self-sufficiency with their search for self-realisation.

“We stopped eating beef for some time” – BSE between daily routines, political crises, and medial scandalisation In this article we discuss the construction of reality and counter-strategies during the BSE-crisis among consumers, political parties and mass media in Germany. Empirical data about experiences and coping patterns in everyday life show a broad variety of responses. These reactions to overcome uncertainty regarding BSE depend on the fact whether a repertoire of knowledge pre-existed or not. Finally, we think that a delay caused by reconsiderations of action among consumers was misinterpreted by politicians and the media.

This paper addresses traditional, locally anchored eating habits in Lusatia during the second half of the 20th century. It focuses specifically on the influences of refugees after World War II and the overall introduction of “sozialistische Gemeinschaftsverpflegung” (socialist community meals). The paper argues that eating habits function as a form of (re)construction of regional identity in these transformation societies.

The article provides a microhistorical approach to the ‚peasant emancipation‘ (/Bauernbefreiung/) in Westphalia, a western province of 19 th century Prussia. The main idea of this agrarian reform was redemption of feudal dues and obligations (/Reallastenablösungen/), for which peasants had to pay redemption capital to their lords. For this reason the history of peasant emancipation is strongly linked to the history of rural credit as a means of finance. The analysis concentrates on three types of financing: the government annuity-bank (/Rentenbank)/ which offered annuity loans, the savings banks (loans and deposits) and the real estate credit market. The central question is whether the existence of informal credit, or the supply of credit at all, could accelerate the progress of redemption. One of the findings is that the structure of the credit markets was no decisive force. The innovative product ‚annuity loan‘ was unpopular among the peasants. Those who could profit most from the overnmental credit were the landlords.
