Soil is the most basic resource of agriculture, and also one of its most mysterious resources. In spite of two centuries of research within the agricultural sciences, soil fertility is still not understood to a significant extent. The article traces the scientific construction of a soil concept in the wake of these unknowns, arguing that this soil concept was not a genuine result of research but a construct that gradually emerged from negotiations between farmers, advisors and scientists in the wake of significant doubts. Specifically, the article looks at the disciplines of agricultural chemistry, soil science, and soil microbiology, discussing the potential and the limits of each approach. In a nutshell, the hegemony of agrochemistry was not so much due to superior scientific merits as the result of the weakness of its scientific competitors, as well as a readiness of the agroindustrial complex to reach out to farmers and supply them with advice and products. Soil tests became a key issue in this controversy as they met with a strong interest within the farming community, and the ultimate victory of chemical soil tests, and the failure of biological and geological ones, was due mostly to a greater willingness of agrochemists to ignore, in a long series of small steps, the demands of scientific precisions. The article concludes by arguing that the environmental problems of agriculture were in a way the result of these blank spots of the agricultural knowledge system, and thus argues for a combination of historical and scientific insights in order to tackle the challenges of the 21st century agriculture.

Max Sering, a famous agronomist, was a stern opponent of Richard Walther Darré, the National Socialist Minister of Agriculture. Sering’s colleague, Constantin von Dietze, an avowed Protestant, was repeatedly imprisoned and tortured by the Nazis, and he was one of those persecuted after the attempt to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944. Thus, the so-called Sering School stood in clear opposition to National Socialism and its agrarian politics. However, one should not ignore that this opposition was based on beliefs intertwined with German nationalism and ethnocentrism. In partial cooperation with Ministers Graf Schwerin-Krosigk, Schacht, and von Blomberg, the Sering School campaigned for the revision of the Versailles Treaty. The school’s members believed in the possibility of initiating a national regeneration by rediscovering and strengthening the peasants and their traditional values. At the same time, they were deeply concerned about the Slavic peoples “flooding” the German East. To prevent this from happening, they proposed the concept of “Internal Colonization” (Innere Kolonisation) – the establishment of peasant settlements along the German borders. In September 1939, septuagenarian Sering celebrated the German attack on Poland as an “act of liberation” in the interest of the Volksdeutsche in Eastern Europe and as a means to reestablish German hegemony in the Eastern territories.

A common diagnosis of agricultural knowledge observes a lack of master-concepts that could compensate the loss of rootedness in agricultural milieus. The article describes the ascent of environmental consultants as a competing profession that could use the concepts of „environment“ and later „sustainability“ to cover a vast range of expertise. The environmental consultants had their background in the natural sciences but they moved outside the university to produce a new kind of politicised expertise. The article uses biographical interviews to describe the invention of these companies.
