On the basis of a late medieval iconographic source from the Upper Rhine, different life sectors and interactions are shown between country and town, women and men, peasants and citizens. An immense tapestry transmits to the citizens of the town of Basel the fiction of a pleasant life, with the harmonic combination between work and happiness. The main motifs in the tapestry are love and truthfulness in gender relations. Observing persons are given requirements of behaviour, in terms of double transmutation of peasants being Wild men. The tapestry appears to be full of realistic details. A possible interpretation thereof might be allusion such as popular rituals concerning the marriage of young people. Within the tapestry, Wild men and women meet equally. Thereby the social form of the institution of marriage might be reflected. Since the High Middle Ages, marriage has been understood as a community of life and as an economic unit. The tapestry shows the asymmetrical relation between town and country, because only the perspective of the town is expressed. As in many sources, the perception of the rural population itself is not mentioned. In this article, some reflexions on the important ecological changes in late medieval Europe are presented; they seem to be reflected in pieces of art such as late medieval tapestries. Wild men, e.g., are relicts of the remote time when forest dominated the landscape.

Exploring women’s intellectual contributions to the history of agricultural progress is a new and promising approach within research on gender and science in the field of agrarian history and sociology. Ursula Schlude applies this approach to a developmental phase of agriculture in Europe that is associated with the emergence of large estates of a new type, and that marks an upswing in agricultural production. In this period, financial and normative writing on problems of agriculture gained in significance. Using the example of a German duchess, Electress Anna of Saxony (1532-1585), the study examines the extent to which the sixteenth-century princely court was a ‚site of knowledge’ in which agricultural practice went hand in hand with the development of agrarian knowledge. The Electress’s agrarian practice is understood here as both an element in the gender-polar conduct of rule by a princely couple and an intellectual activity. The case study is accompanied by the suggestion that we view agrarian knowledge as part of non-academic cultures of knowledge in which women were present, unlike at the universities. It is thus only consistent, the argument continues, that we must integrate a gender perspective more generally into the history of agriculture and agricultural knowledge in Early Modern Times.

Since German universities opened their doors to female students in the beginning oft the 20th century, women have been seizing the opportunity to matriculate in agricultural science. The number of female students has increased continuously during the century; their percentage has almost reached 50 per cent nowadays. Not until the 1970s, however, women more obviously pursued a doctoral degree. The pronounced inter- and transdisciplinarity of the agricultural sciences supported women’s professionalization. Not only with a degree in agricultural science, but also in natural science, law or economy did they have the opportunity to work and earn a doctorate at an agricultural university. Sketching a few biographies, the article shows women’s stories of success but also their experienced discrimination and obstacles they had to overcome.
