During the last century economical, social and political changes have heavily influenced living and working conditions of farming women in South Tyrol, a province in the northern part of Italy. How did these changes, which are still in progress, influence the self-perception of farming women in South Tyrol? How did the self-perception of farming women change during the last decades? These and other questions were investigated in a research project conducted at the Free University of Bozen - Bolzano (Italy) in 2006 and 2007. In the framework of the research project 37 farming women with quite different living and working conditions were interviewed. The interviewees were between 24 and 65 years old and lived in four different regions of South Tyrol. The selection of the interviewees was made according to production background (fruit-growing farm, wine-growing farm or livestock-farm), to the location of the farm (mountain or valley as well as distance to town) and to the extent of employment of the woman on and outside the farm, etc.

How cattle was kept inside and outside the so called „Fachhallenhaus“(a type of house where men and cattle usually lived together under one roof) during different periods, is a question seldom asked. There is a big gap between our information on the structure of medieval farmhouses on the one and shape and number of cattle on the other hand. The variation in growth and weight of cows from Northwestern Germany within the last 500 years is obvious, but has never been discussed in its relation to the stables. A farmhouse in the region of Osnabrück, built in 1480, allows to compare the reconstructed cowbarns with a list of the livestock on this farm dating from 1458. This comparison shows that there must have been other forms of keeping cattle in those days, because the house was not spacious enough to accommodate the mentioned cattle. For long it was common to think that cows and horses lived inside the so called “Fachhallenhaus”. It was also common opinion, that pigs were stalled up outside because of their malodour. In fact special piggeries were widespread, but for various reasons. Medieval relicts of these piggeries have not been found up to now. But we can get information from different sources like book illustrations, sculptures and fine art pictures. They show that there existed a special type of piggery throughout northwest Europe. Variations of the typical piggery show a clap to feed the animals since the late 16th century and mobile barns in the 19th century. At last national attributes were combined with the piggery-type in the political caricature of the early 19th century.

This contribution explores in a first step the relationship of farmers to their entire livestock and to singular farm animals at a critical live event: the outbreak of diseases. It demonstrates through qualitative data analysis and case-studies how peasants perceive and copy the killing of the entire livestock. It will exemplify, that cases of animal diseases not only have an economical impact, but that the experience leaves farmers traumatized. It documents the human-animal relationship in a situation of trauma, shock and psychosocial problems and elaborates the reasons, why the human-animalrelationship became of great importance for concerned farmers. From the search for understanding what farm animals represent in agricultural day to day practice it discusses in a second step the different sides and rich diversity of living with and keeping farm animals.

The article deals with the life of two animals that generated intense media interest in 2006, even before Knut the polar bear in Berlin attracted the attention of the worldwide press. These animal fates exemplify form and function of the media regarding “wild animals”. The basic question is how the animal-man construction in the mass media reveals everyday relations between man and animals. The two popular animal stories show, that even wild animals attract the general public interest when they are individualised and personified. This public discourse of animal lives illustrates a society that can only live with wild animals when they either do not disturb the society or have human features. The broad public interest in wild animal stories further depicts the alienation of man and nature and the attempts to compensate it.
